Possibly a dumb question

I haven't used Linux much yet, just fooled around a little, but I have a small problem. I'm using Fedora 4 and have installed all the updates. I need to get to it remotely. I'm using Secure CRT and the SSH2 protocol instead of telnet. I can't login as su. I can login as root with the root pw, but su doesn't work with the root password. Am I missing something here?

Just to clarify-

you log in as a user
login: username
[username@localhost] $
and you're ok at this point. Then you:
$ su
You get an error? If so, what error do you get?

Furthermore, if you
login: root
can you login?

you do not log in as su. su is a command to switch user, the default (with no arguments) is root. you can su to any user, but most of the time the only one you would be interested in is root.
