Possible to delete default icons on Debian GNOME desktop?

I was just wondering if it's possible to remove the default icons (Computer, Trash, Home etc.) on the desktop in GNOME (Debian). I never use them and they are annoying and are a distraction from the cool artwork.

Assuming you have gconf-editor installed...

SystemTools|ConfigurationEditor|Apps|Nautilus|Desktop

I just wanted to add this still works even though it was posted 3 years ago....I just got rid of my ugly default desktop icons. I mean really, who keeps the trash can right on the desk?
