possible to boot linux on any machine with portable external HD?!!

wondering if it is possible to install linux o/s on a partition of my external hd, so that i can travel with just the ext hd. and plug it into another person's(or internet cafes) computer via the usb 2.0, and then set that computer to boot the linux off my hd...essentially creating a portable computer where all i need is to use someone elses system, but run my familiar setup with all my files and folder/ music etc..??while only carrying the ext. hd with me...

thanks

you could try it out. if you set the computer to boot usb i dont see how it would be a problem since dsl can run of a usb thumb drive.

This is possible, provided that the computer (or rather, BIOS) in question can boot from a usb hard drive.

A recent motherboard (< approx. 2 years old) should be able to do this, older mobos probably can't. But you can always use a boot floppy/CD. The only problem is getting a kernel (and maybe an initrd) loaded, once that's done then it can access the usb drive itself.
