Red face possible disk failure

Hi folks, I have a Compac proliant380 with two diks. One
is a mirror of the other... I look at one of the disks and
it has a red flashing dustbin or "Garbage can" icon on the
left hand disk.I have looked at messages and dmesg trying
to find if a mirror transfer has taken place, but am no nearer
to finding out this. Can anyone provide some info ?
RH version is 2.4.18-14 or 8 (thinks)
thanks in advance....

Are you using software RAID-1 to mirror the physical disks then accessing the disks via a /dev/mdX device yeah? If so take a look at /proc/mdstat that should indicate if a disk is down.

cheers

Thanks for the reply, when I look at the mdstat file it contains
very little info. Is there a gui that I can use to view my raid
config ? or even just a text log file to view for info. By the way
the light on the drive is flashing amber.....

Post the output of "cat /proc/mdstat". There should be something that looks like
Code:
8883840 blocks [2/2] [UU]
the [UU] bit from one of my mdstat files indicates that both my disks are up, if you don't have this then there should be some other message to tell you whats going on. The contents of /etc/raidtab might be useful too.

cheers

Uhm. I imagine you must be using a Compaq hardware raid controller of some kind, this isn't something I've ever needed to play with so can't be any help really. What software are you using that is showing you the "garbage can" icon for the drive?

cheers

Soory for taking a wee while to get back....
The garbage icon is actually on the disk drive itself.
I will be swapping the drive over soon, but am still no
nearer determining the harware raid side of things.
The support from compaq is pretty S***
