Question posfix mail server on linux


hello forum,

i am new to this forum, i hope i get my anwser. well i am trying to setup postfix mail server on my redhat 9.0. (postix version 1.2 ) through rpm installation. i have already visited postfix.org documentation. now as per documentation i have made changes to main.cf file and also in dns.
1) now i dont know how to test if every thing is working correctly.
2) if there is more clear cut documentation or sample config file which i can i get it would be very much help.
3)do i need to install imap also.

Frist off go install webmin http://webmin.com :-D
Then get Dovecot.. http://dag.wieers.com/packages/dovecot/
Serivce Dovcecot Start
Impd is running now!

mail server

hello thanks for helping,

i have already installed webmin.
i am willing to run this service with mysql database. we are currently using courier-imap.
will this dove cot suite to database needs ?

one more thing if u know any website that can help me out with basic working of mail servers i would love to know that

Um ... postfix is a MTA whereas Dovecot is a POP3/IMAP server -- they do totally different things. But more recent releases of Dovecot allow for the user list to be stored in a MySQL database. If you want to try with Dovecot for your IMAP/POP3 needs, I heartily recommend reading www.dovecot.org and using the most recent 0.99 version.

Can't help you with the Postfix since I'm a Sendmail user -- sorry.

I'm a postfix user.

I'd say see if the server recieves and sends email. It may help to keep a tail -f on /var/log/maillog while testing.

If you run into problems post the errors from the log.

ideal mail user agent.

hello friends

thanks for ur prompt help , now i have configured postfix which is a MTA. can any one tell me what would be ideal message user agent for it.

and one last thing do i need to configure smtp server or it would be configured by defualt

I got postfix running together with uw-imap. For clients I got evolution and squirrelmail and pine, works ok.

Unhappy imap authentication

hi

my postfix is working fine, but there is trouble with authenticating courier imap and mysql. i made required changes in authmysqlrc and authdaemonrc in courier imap. and also restarted ./authdaemon and courierimap service

i am trying to authenticate by
telnet localhost 143
a login <nameinDB> <passinDB>
