you may have to be root, although that seems odd.
Check the permissions of htdocs.

I got a reply from Nginx forum saying (copy your web to /var/www) so I then asked how and got (the usual way) as an answer so that was great, and I did send my question to the Howto section so I have now asked for a bit of detail. I have not looked into the permissions yet.
