Pop# server times out waiting from response for receiver
 

Hello,
I have one email account that seems to be jammed. My email will not download and I get the following message:

Task 'secure - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server.

I am assuming this is due to a large email blocking it up, but it has been this way for almost 24hours.
Does anyone know how I would go about finding which email may be causing this problem on the server side and deleting it from the server?

What OS, Linux I presume?
What email client?
Is your POP account hosted on one of your servers or your ISP?

If it's your Linux email server, then look at server's /var/mail/$USERNAME. And/or access the mail on the server and then use mail command to view the email.

If it's on your ISP's server and if they have webmail access, then look at your messages via the webmail interface.

Maybe a firewall misconfiguration?

Maybe an incorrect POP mail password?

A mail server problem?

Have you tried closing the connection and pulling your email again.

It is a Linux email server. The mail is downloaded to Microsoft outlook on Windows. I did log in to my Linux server and view the mail, but I do not know how to tell which email may be causing the problem nor do I know how to safely delete it or push it through.

It has been downloading fine until yesterday, so I do not think misconfiguration or password could be the problem. I did disconnect from the internet and reconnect to see if that would do the trick, but no luck.

If I reboot my email server (sendmail or vm-pop3d), will that delete all of the emails that are sitting on the server that have not downloaded? If they will stay safe, I will try that, but I can not risk losing any emails because they are actually online orders.

Could be your anti-virus is causing the problem. Some search results say to temporarily disable A/V, then download the mail. Others say to upgrade A/V software. There are some other troubleshooting steps listed in the KB's.

Reboot will not remove the mail.

If you didn't change any mail settings on either the server or client or any network changes, it's possible the Outlook email profile settings got corrupted.

I don't know what your email server setup is, but if was mine I would connect to the server, use the mail command (note: mail command does not handle HTML formated messages) to view each message (this will take it out of delivery queue), forward each mail at a time to the same email recipient (this will put it back in the queue), and then use Outlook to receive the mail. If one hangs up, you know which one it is.

Or, use Kmailshow:
