"plus before [] ignored" msg's while booting: normal?

Hi to all,

Newbie here. I've installed Red Hat 9 for two weeks now and I'm in the proccess of tweaking it. I have the following question:
while booting, among other messages, I get a big list of lines saying "plus before xxxx ignored", where xxx is various words I do not understand (ccedila, Ccedila, igrave, Igrave, etc). I have no problems with the os, but it seems odd and I'm just wondering what do they mean and if they can be avoided.

Thanks in advance.

cedila, igrave and such things are (in short) names of different symbols used in many languages under or over letters. Like in ź or ó and so on. The messages you get probably mean that there's something wrong with encoding. Which one do you have after start? It's easiest to check using
echo $LANG
What's the answer?

Edit: Example characters should now look OK.
