Unhappy pls help me !!!!1cannot format with mke2fs

Hi all,
I have a SATA hard disk of 80GB p4 processor with 512 MB ram. whenever i try to format a partition with mke2fs -j
it gives me an error saying " Cannot find device "

Whwn i created a new partition with fdisk at times the command mke2fs command works but the majority of the times it does not work giving an eror message.
After creating a new partition i use partprobe to effect the changes....Pls help me out

Are you specifying a device? With all mk commands, you'll need the partition listed that you are trying to reformat. Ex:
mke2fs -j /dev/hda1

You can find out which devices are what partitions with cfdisk /dev/hda ...just don't write unless you want to make changes. (replace hda with hdb if you are formatting a secondary hard drive)
You also must be root or sudo to format typically.

Are you substituting x with the relevant number, or are you literally using "mke2fs -jv /dev/sdax"?
