Please recommend a linux distibution for my old pc..
Can anybody recommend a good linux distribution for my old computer? One that is not so hard to use and is good for playing multimedia. It has 256MB RAM and 30GB hard disk space and an Intel Celeron 2.53 ghz processor. But I 'm going to dual boot this with Windows XP..
Thanks! |
There are many Linux distros that will work on that hardware, but I would still recommend adding more RAM.
The lightweight distros include Arch and DSL, but just about any of the mainstream distros can be tailored to do just fine. Since you are used to Ubuntu and Mint, why not try those first? |
Or Xubuntu; it seems to run fine on computers slightly older than that (those marked with shiny new Win98 stamps).

I used puppy linux on pc's like yours. It works pretty good and is small to download. :)http://www.puppylinux.org/

I think whats more important is your comfort level with linux. No offense but if youre asking that question I have to assume that youre still learning the ropes and something like LFS might not be your best choice.
Im surprised nobody has asked your experience level yet. |
Try Xubuntu and see if it works well on your hardware.

If your experienced at Linux I would try Slackware (with XFCE), if not I would go with PuppyLinux or Xubuntu.

thanks!
ok maybe i'll try puppy or xubuntu.. i tried installing old versions of mint and ubuntu on my pc but it takes too long that my patience runs out. im really not used to linux yet and i want to explore which distros i could get along with. thanks for your recommendations!

For multimedia I'd definitely recommend more RAM if possible. That stuff tends to be a bit of a hog these days.
It'd also give you a bigger range of usable distros. |
