Please recommend a distro...
 

Does anybody know if any recent Linux distros are compatible with a Dell Inspiron 510m which has the Intel 855 Graphics card ?

I have partioned and installed Mandrake 10.0 successfully, but get a green screen at the end of the boot process. Doesn't even work in safe mode.

I know this is a well-covered topic, and yes there have been patches written to solve it, but as a newbie I am not in a position to install those, I want a Linux distro which works 'out of the box' as far as possible - so that I can learn more about it and stop being a newbie!!! (we'll get to the wireless card later on...!)

Suse 9.2 supports the card that you have.. for example:

shows that suse detects the card even with 8.2 release.

I'd reccomend going through your hardware spec and then checking for a distro that supports it. You might find you have a whole lot of options available to you. I used my spec + distrowatch to sift through some of the different distros available. I settled on mandrake 10.1 (which works flawlessly), but I now have a good idea of which other distros might be compatible with my notebook - which is great, because I'd like to explore other options. :)
Remember, just because a distribution works, it still might not meet all your needs such as package management, community, philosophy, support, cool logo, etc.

Well, it sounds like you have the committment to learn linux. You may want to try Slackware. I'm running it on a Dell Inspiron 1000, which I got when that model was brand new and slack supported it like a dream, although for some reason I don't have sound right now and have been too busy with school to look in to. Thank god Spring Break is almost here. You may want to try Fedora Core as well. That was a fun distro to play around with.

Yast query
 

Hi

Am now trying to install Suse 9.2 on my Dell Inspiron 510M (1.42gHz Centrino with Intel 855 graphics card) but when I get to Yast, to configure and partition, the important parts of the screen are blacked. The font is pretty fuzzy too.

Can anyone suggest what to do to make Yast 'readable' so that I can partition and configure correctly?

hmm...odd... my lapppy has the same card but no issues....
have you tried Arch? or Mepis... that tends to work, and you can always copy the Xfree86 config to your other distro (it's cheating, but works)

Dear Suse'ers,

Just 2 weeks before Suse 9.3 Professional is available.....

This would probably the best choice for any modern system, with lots out of the box support....
