I am very smart about technology. I have just recently installed linux of coours being the smartest person in all of my family i can get help from them so i will need help over the internet. I just installed mandrake 10.1 i couldnt get the internet to work but then i did.

So here is the big question.

Im tring to download limewire but i dont know which place to save it to or how to install it. After memorizing windows for 6 years i knew every thing about it. But i dont know how to install the bin or where to install it.

So..

1. Are almost all installing files bin???
2. How do I install a bin???
3. Where do I save the bin to???
4. How do I run the program after???
5. Also is there an eBook I can donwload and put on my PDA eBook read that will help me with Mandrakelinux 10.1???

Hi Freak,

.bin files usually are self-decompressing files. What does "file foobar.bin" tell you, where foobar.bin is the name of your file? If it says executable binary or something to that effect, move the file to /tmp and execute the file to unpack its contents. You may also find that it is an installer. In any case, it is best to run it in an X server terminal such as gnome-terminal or konsole.

Limewire should hang their heads in shame for not providing more information on their site. I recommend you try Apollon, which will let you access the same network, and has a decent installer, and a large linux user base. The documentation for Apollon is also definitely superior:

http://apollon.sourceforge.net/

You want this installer:
http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sou...taller-0.6.run

Execute the downloaded file (i.e. "./apollon-installer-0.6.run" in a terminal window) to install.

HTH,

Samsara

OK thanks for the program i downloaded it numerous times. But I stilll dont know really how to install it or open it. IF bin is self executable how do you do it. When i save it i save it to home/administrator/ or sometimes /autosave how do you run it or the installer. There are alt of questions i need but these will do for now.And alsoit would be easier over msn or the phone. Becasue i really need this to work. Also does Mandrake only work on amd 64 processors? And try to explain it like im a huge noob even though im smart at window. CAn you tell me step by step how to do it??? im a :newbie: If you could explian it step by step (like you click on the starr then home the you right click) like that. that would be GREATLY APPRICIATED!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I MEAN GREATLY APPRICATED!!!!

It should be as easy as
1. Start a terminal
2. cd to where oyu dowloaded the file.
3. ./<name of file here.bin>

Please don't boast your intelligence when spelling and grammar seem to be so difficult. No one wants to hear that kind of thing anyway.

Goodluck in your linux adventure. It's a good os to learn how a computer really works.

bash [filename].bin

No brackets.

By the way, please - as little talking as possible.

Ok When i run the terminal it saves as limewirelinux.bin on desktop thats what it says when i go run command then options tehn check off run as a terminal it says no such file name
What does that mean?

Since you're very new in this, try to keep it simple.
Limewire uses the same network as gtk-gnutella.
Gtk-Gnutella has an easy installer and is faster anyway.
http://gtk-gnutella.sourceforge.net/

Once you'll get a little more comfortable with linux, try giFT.

PS: Please do change your childish signature.
