Please help Virgin with Fedora 10

First of all, I am sorry, but am very new to Linux OS, but just installed Fedora 10 on a rebuilt computer. I can basically go no further because I can't install anything through Yum, because I have to first configure a cheap wireless PCI card that I installed for internet access. I read a post from elsewhere from someone whom had the same wireless card that I do (which has no Linux distributable drivers), in which he used "ndiswrapper" to install the driver from the .inf file (from CD).

So, next is that I do not know how to check for header files in a kernel.

Then, I do not know how to follow the instructions from the ndiswrapper Install file (below):

This will create ndiswrapper-version directory. Change to that
directory and run

make uninstall
make

Login as root and run
make install

And, with Fedora 10, would I need to also install the "Wireless Tools"?

Please, someone help. If I can at least get the internet running in Fedora, I think it will be a lot easier to work with and learn.

Just tried following the INSTALL instructions included with the ndiswrapper 1.54 download, and I apparently do not even have the kernel file located in /user /src (which was where the shortcut /lib/modules/build was pointing to.

How do I find and install the kernel and headers?

Hello New friends,

I am happy to be a member of the Linux community now and am very glad to be here posting. I thought I would post here to save forum space, as the subject is more eloquent than mine and essentially covers the same idea. I just snapped on Friday night, got really tired of windows, and installed Fedora 10. So far, I like it a lot, but as I really have no experience at all with Linux, so I am experiencing quite a big learning curve. I realize I am putting a lot of questions out here, but I'd like to refer to only this thread when helping myself and my friends (who I hope to convince to switch to Linux) when ironing out issues. Consequently, please feel free to address whichever topics are easiest or most convenient for you to answer. None of these are urgent, but I am pretty sure they can all be answered eventually. Thank you in advance for your time; I hope someday to understand enough to be able to post here in the guise of a teacher rather than a student. In order of importance (to me):

~1. I've installed ATI's proprietary driver for my X1300 video card. I have two monitors, and I'd like to have a wide desktop. I have the option to open the ATI catalyst control center (super-user mode) but I have no idea how to do it. Clicking on it does nothing, and typing sudo [location] yields the following result:

[thezerodragon@localhost ~]$ sudo '/home/thezerodragon/amdccclesu.desktop'
/home/thezerodragon/amdccclesu.desktop: line 1: [Desktop: command not found
/home/thezerodragon/amdccclesu.desktop: line 4: syntax error near unexpected token `('
/home/thezerodragon/amdccclesu.desktop: line 4: `Name=ATI Catalyst Control Center (super-user)'

How do I open this program as a super-user?

~2 Do I have the option to not display the desktop icons? What about the taskbars?

~3 Is there any way to run the Zune software (I'm rather attached to mine)?

~4 Why can't I enable desktop effects?

I had more questions, but was able to resolve them myself, so perhaps I'm not completely hopeless.

Desktop effects, desktop icons and taskbars vary from desktop environment to desktop environment. The world is bigger then Gnome and KDE. Try Fluxbox, XFCE or some similar lightweight desktops, if looking for different approaches.

What is Zune software? Is this something that every person on the planet should know about? If it's a windows applications, then run it via 'wine'.

Please DO NOT hijack a thread on ndiswrapper ( this is not related to your video issues)
or related to a zune , or desktop effects

Please start A NEW THREAD

maresmasb:

How do I go about switching my GUI, and where can I find the alternatives you suggested?
Zune software runs the Zune, Microsoft's answer to the iPod, so I suppose "wine" is in order. How do I obtain it?

John VV:

Pardon my impropriety. Threadjacking was not my intent, rather I thought that people might prefer all of the Fedora 10 newbie questions in one place. I am just beginning to learn the protocol in this forum, and I thank you for your patience.

I've started a new thread here : http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...5/#post3506872
