please help me to change root password in run level 1 in rhel 6


i am not able to change my root password in rhel 6 even in run level 1
if i type passwd in runlevel 1 it returns
denied (read) for pid 791 comm=passwd
i tried this command :- chattr -i /etc/passwd, chattr -i /etc/shadow also but doesnot worked out.
please help me i ma new to linux

It seems SELinux is getting in your way. Try running setenforce 0 before running the passwd command, it should (temporarily) switch SELinux to "Permissive Mode".

also it is almost NEVER a good idea to boot into level1
( single user) -- might have SE issues
as in SE will think you are a hacker and STOP you - it is designed to DO THIS


use level3
multi user TEXT ONLY

single user is great for FIXING the mess one have made
but for normal everyday "oopses" and updates

use "telinit 3 "
or add a 3 to the end of grub 0.9 kernel line


Warning:
if you DO set "setenforce=0"
the next boot might REALLY take TWO DAYS TO BOOT ( 48+ hours )

the WHOLE set of drives needs to be rechecked
and if this is a 24 Terabit system ?????????
have fun waiting for it to complete
