Please help me configure KDE. - My KDE still looks like GNOME in some apps
 

I am using a fresh install of Debian Etch 4 r3 KDE.

My desktop looks like KDE but whenever I run Firefox/Iceweasel or any other GNOME app, they all look like GNOME. This is specially evident when I "SAVE" and "NAVIGATE" menus while uploading or saving files. The icons, the interface - they're just too gnomey for my own good.

No offense to GNOME users devs but GNOME just makes me feel like being a left-handed person in a right-handed persons world.

Try the GTK-Qt Theme Engine which makes your GTK2 Apps (like Firefox) match your QT theme in KDE.

Sure Firefox/Iceweasel is DE independant. I use it in KDE and can see nothing 'GNOMEic' about it.

Installing GTK-Qt only changed a few buttons. Ah I guess I'll make it more understood by posting a picture.

Yes the GTK-Qt Theme engine doesn't change the icons.
To add a new icon theme, you can try installing one you like from http://www.gnome-look.org/
and manually editing the $HOME/.gtkrc-2.0-kde file generated by the GTK-Qt Theme engine, adding a line like :
...
gtk-icon-theme-name = "Icons theme name"
...
Then logout/login.

Alternatively you can try :
1) to uninstall the GTK-Qt Theme engine, along with the ~/.gtkrc-2.0-kde and ~/.kde/env/gtk-qt-engine.rc.sh files generated by it
2) to use an harmonized qt and gtk2 theme like the QtCurve,
look the kde-look.org site for more infos.
But I don't know if it changes the gtk2 icons.

If it doesn't, you can try the first method given above, with the ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file.
Don't forget to logout/login to have the changes enabled.

I don't think you will get exactly the same look though.
Try different things and stay with the one you prefer.

Thank you for your noble efforts. I decided to just ditch the whole idea. this is beyond my capabilities I've tried both of your suggestions to no results.

Anyway, I give up on firefox since it is too slow anyhow.

I'll just have to bear with the Frankenstein look now.

You should not give up so easily.
I can only encourage you to persist and try the many different gtk2 and icon themes which exist for your gtk2 applications.
Personally I use the gtk2 theme called "Industrial", but there are many others.

Don't stay with something you don't like.
You have many choices in Linux.
But it's all your choice.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I will try again tomorrow. However, I am beginning to feel that my problem does not really lie on the themeing of gnome apps to make them look like kde apps. It is more about folder and file navigation which cannot be resolved through simple themeing. The icons are merely the aesthetic portion to the whole thing.

I. In Konqueror browser, try to save a file:

To the left you have:

1. Desktop
2. Home Folder
3. Storage Media
4. Network Folders

Above you have:

1. The address bar where you can type for example: /media/hdb1

To the right you have the folders and files list which depends on your settings, whether it is detailed, list, etc.


II. In Gimp

To the left you have:

1. Username
2. Desktop
3. File System

Above you have:

1. A set of buttons representing the folder hierarchy

To the right you have the list of folders and files.

--Your desktop btw looks nice, thanks for the extra effort in helping me but I think the problem is not merely about themes.

I partially solved the problem. Using two solutions the GTK solution that you gave and a similar one in http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/nonautilusplease

Unfortunately, the solution by psychocats also uninstalled a lot of things without confirmation! I lost all my games and some other applications. Weird.

I discovered too that the icons' name in firefox is Nautipolis and Littlefox. Which they may have gotten from Gnome icons.

File manager which appears when clicking Save As is still Nautilus with Gnome icons.

I just want the default Firefox 3 Beta icons.
