Welcome to the forums!

If you are new to Linux, why not try an easy, user-friendly distribution such as Ubuntu, Mint, etc.?

Knoppix is meant to be used as a Live CD/USB, not installed to hard disk: http://smtp.knoppix.net/wiki/HD_Inst...g_not_to_do_it

And the error message says _______?

Are you carefully following this guide step-by-step? http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/...g-term-support

What are the hardware specs of your computer?

yeah i try to download unbuntu 12.04 but i find a message ho says:windows failed to start,a recent hardware or software change might be the cause.to fix the problem:
1)insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
2)choose your language setting, and then click next
3)click repair your computer
if you dont have this disc, contact yoursystem administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance the application or operating system couldnt be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors
i try to use an unbuntu 12.04 and 11.10 .iso in VMware player but it doesnt work well,

Your post is a little hard to understand. Are you saying that you are currently stuck at step #1 of this guide: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/...g-term-support

and you haven't yet done steps 2-10?

and you can't download Ubuntu because your Windows won't boot?

Do I understand correctly?

It sounds like you need to try to download the linux distro of your choice from a working computer. You must then carefully follow all of the instrutions in the guide. It could be Windows 8 interfering with its UEFI and secureboot combo as well......those monopolies!

That is what were trying to do! If I understand correctly, Windows 8 isn't working on your PC, and you are trying to get Linux on your laptop. My advice for you to do this is to burn a linux operating system onto a cd or dvd, and then attempt an install while following the maker of the linux operating system's instructions.

Have you checked your BIOS to see if you can boot from an external device such as a dvd or a cd?

Cheers

Whatever linux operating system you want to use! If it is knoppix, then you should burn a knoppix iso image to a cd/dvd. If it is ubuntu, you should burn an ubuntu cd/dvd etc. It is really up to you to decide what operating system is the operating system for you.
