Try running:
redhat-xfree86-config

i tired man it says
i typed that change resolution and then hit ok and then it says settin iz changed u have 2 logg out and restart x server.... i did logoff but didnt work :(

its self explaitary.
check your Monitor's manual for camparable scan rates.
