Please help
I had linux installed on my computer because I could not take vista anymore.
After using windows for so long this is so different. Can someone tell me if I can download aol software with linux and if i can download itunes or something like it. I would appreciate any help Thanks |
you have to install wine
i dont know about your distro but mine you type sudo apt-get install wine and press yes to any prompts download the windows version of the software and type winecfg press ok then type wine <software name here> |
Songbird is similar to iTunes, sort of.
What AOL software do you want to use? |
After you install wine you should use separate prefixes that way uninstalling windows programs is a easy. Just delete the folder.
|
In most cases there are similar applications that you can use. For example, you can you pidgin for AIM, MSN, ICQ, QQ, IRC, etc. Just look for the Linux equivalents.
|
Thanks everyone
The aol software I meant is aol 9.0 or 9.1 I had it with windows but now it is gone plus all my music and pictures |
Probably best if you tell us what tasks you want to do, then we can recommend the Linux equivalent tools. See eg http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/...ndows_software

Apple does not have a version of iTunes for Linux (for some reason they are ignoring us).
AOL also does not have a version for Linux of their client. Do you purchase songs via iTunes store ... or do you use iTunes just to manage your iPod ? |
I used i-tunes for buying music and to manage my i-pod plus I had about 1900 songs and they are all gone.
This is because I couldn't take vista anymore. When I installed linux I forgot to back up everything. Thanks for getting back to me. |
Depending on how you did the installation, some of your data may be recoverable. If you want to pursue this, give us the disk configuration (number and type of partitions) before and after installing Linux.
|
and do as little as possable on your computer until then
|
I think Yamipod can download the songs off of the iPod (there are probably many other utilities ...)
|
Apple can pound sand with their big bloated itunes crap.
These work well. Gpodder is better on windows than itunes. Also for BSD, and Linux gpodder http://gpodder.org/ gtkpod http://www.gtkpod.org/about.html Wine has come a long way in the last couple of years. Wine for FreeBSD will run most windows apps now. I think its a little more advanced in Linux. If you have a look around you can probably find native open source apps that will suit you. http://www.frankscorner.org/ http://www.dlldump.com/ http://www.kde-apps.org/ http://www.gnomefiles.org/ http://www.icewalkers.com/linux/software http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/...ndows_software http://www.freebsdsoftware.org/ |
