Playing windows games such as FFXI and Half Life 2
 

I have no real knowledge of linux, but hearing good things was wondering just what sort of gaming capabilities it had. I am purchasing a new pc soon and was thinking about installing linux instead of winxp, which hasnt been very reliable or easy. I was curious as to the playability of games on the linux system. Are the mmorpgs playable. (FFXI , worlds of warcraft, etc.) what about half life 2 and doom 3?

this is a service you have to pay for, but it ports many DX games into Linux with little or no noticable differance in performance. to top it off will have the more stable kernal behind it so even if the game crashes your entire system will not crash.

its rather cheap too at something like $6 a month or something low like that. i personaly have not used it, but i have used crossover office for porting over business programs like QuickBooks Pro and that works extreemly well.

both wineX and CrossOver Office are forks of the wine project. wine is free, but XOoffice and wineX you do have to pay for their service.

with XOoffice it is a one time fee, with wineX is it monthly, quarterly, or yearly.

I may be misguided on some recent developments, but I know that I have been following ID's release of D3 quite a bit lately (can't wait for wednesday, can't wait for wednesday). I have never personally had a problem getting ID games to work on my rh9 system, since they make native linux versions of their games. So as such, I am expecting the same thing from D3. hf2, and warcraft make me wonder a bit more, though. often those games are written with heavy reliance on directx (?).

I have heard a few good things from people using WineX, but the installation and tweaking has always put me off of trying it. Doom3 is good for me, and as long as ID continues to produce native *nix games, I will continue to support them by buying their software...
