I have been trying for a few days to get an answer on how to play avi files under linux. Mostly have been over in the Mandrake forums (no help received regarding this). I finally got xmms playing mpg video files correctly, what about avi??
Greetings. You can use real player,or the kde media player to play most movies, even .avi's. there are many selections of movie players at linux.davecentral.com, have fun
What about xine? Does that play avis? I'm pretty sure it does. I have used xine and the playback quality is excellent, although the user interface is pretty crap.
Yeah, xine plays it im pretty sure. Im pretty sure vlc plays .avi's too. (By the way - if you want to watch dvd's in linux, I highly recommend ogle and vlc
well, I can right-click on an mpg video file and select Open with kde media player and then I get a blank kde media screen that says Song Looping but nothing ever displays. If I right-click on an avi file, all I get is kde asking me what application to use to open the file with... I searched my Control Center, Software Manager for other video playing software but I dont see any other. I will go to the website you mentioned, tomorrow.
mandrake 8.1 includes xanim and aktion. xanim is the one of the best media players for (among other files) avis. install it and then go to your avi dir and type xanim mymovie.avi. If you ad +Sr after it you will be able to scale the movie files. aktion media player is also pretty cool but it uses xanim to play files so you may as well just only use xanim.
Hope this helps a bit.
Ok, i will check out those websites this evening. I am at work now. da Perp - I checked for aktion and xanim before I ever posted this - my mandrake 8.1 standard edition (3 CDs) does not have either one.
