playing dvd's in kaffeine openSUSE 10.2
 

Hi, I am using opensuse 10.2, and having some trouble getting dvd playback to work. I understand that by default the os is not allowed to ship with support for this, and I have updated the xine engine using packmans libxine1. I am now able to get mp3s playing fine, and standard non css video will play fine, but I am unable to play store bought dvds. When opening in kaffeine I get a message saying I may not have the rights to play back the dvd, and then another error saying it cannot find a plugin to support the dvd data. I get this same error when I run kaffeine as root, so I don't think it is a permission thing, I think my xine engine hasn't been updated to allow for css playback. Does anyone know of a good library I can use to update xine for this? Or an alternative media player? I have tried mplayer and vlc media player, but neither will play css dvds. vlc apparently has a library called libdvdcss, but I have been unable to find it.

Any help would be appreciated, I just want to watch my movies!:newbie:

You need libdvdcss (well, when I installed it, it was called libdvdcss2) for Xine. After that it should work fine. I don't know SuSE-specific instructions but I bet Google finds them for you.

Kaffeine might not be the best player for DVDs, I rather use XineUI myself; it doesn't look good out-of-the-box but you can always get another ui. and it works with dvd discs a lot better than other front-ends (kaffeine and alike tend to not play the dvd correctly; some movies stop in the root menu where I can't select anything, some only play the first section/whatever, some play 20min and restart the movie etc..no idea why, since the engine is the same, and works with XineUI well).

Look at the sticky message in the Novel/SuSE forum. You can add a packman distro source as an installation source. That makes it easier to install programs like audacity and xmms from that site along with the dependencies.

It also makes upgrading them easier. In the YaST2 package manager, you can select "By Repository" in the first filter. Another filter will pop up where you can enter a package name. This could reveal related library packages as well. Another thing you can do is Select by repository, and then in the right hand pane, right click and choose "All in this list..." -> "Upgrade if newer available".

Hi all, thanks for the help, I found the rpm on the videolan site, I was looking in the wrong place earlier:) I have packman installed as an installation source, but it would not find the libdvdcss for some reason. I don't mind the kaffeine ui, but will look around for some others. I use windvd on my Windows system, but am trying to wean myself off using Windows, and now I can watch dvd's I am very happy with opensuse as an os :cool:
