Playing 5.1 sound on stereo speakers

Hello there.
I'm trying to get my stereo speakers work with 5.1 audio sources.

Just recently i found that when i play movie with more than stereo audio (ac3 5.1 for instance), i can hear only part of the channels.
I figured that it tries to output 5.1 sound to my stereo speakers.
So I googled about the problem and got to the point where i created custom pcm.!surround51.
Which seems to route channels properly to my stereo speakers. Tested using # speaker-test -D surround51 -c 6 -t wav.
But now I can't figure out how to make it used by default in VLC player and/or MPlayer.

My system is Slackware64 with multilib from Allien Bob.
There is screenshot of my alsamixer setup in attachments.

Any ideas of how to get it working?

~/.asoundrc >
Code:
pcm.!surround51 {
type route
slave.pcm "default"
slave.channels 6
ttable.0.0 1
ttable.1.1 1
ttable.2.0 1
ttable.3.1 1

# Center channel routing (routed to front-left and front-right),
ttable.4.0 0.7
ttable.4.1 0.7

# LFE channel routing (routed to front-left and front-right),
ttable.5.0 0.7
ttable.5.1 0.7
}

Finally made some progress.

Changed device to surround51 in VLC. But the method i were following didn't work out.
Although it were working fine with speaker-test, it didnt work with VLC.

So i switched to vdownmix as pointed in Arch wiki for downmixing surround to stereo. So far so good. VLC works and all, but there seems to be a bug in vdownmix, LFE channel is silent.

Using latest stable versions of alsa-{lib,oss,utils,plugins,tools} (compiled by myself).
So i'm not there just yet. Will report back, if I find a solution or something.

Have a nice day,
heiser

Same issue here, though I'm pretty sure it worked before with previous VLC (currently using 2.0.7).
mplayer works though, so I'm begining to think it's an issue with VLC. Going to try previous version.

Indeed it works for me using VLC-git from 2013/04/24 but not 2013/06/22.
