play linux connected to the internet but cant connect
Hi
I have installed PLAY LINUX and can get onto chrome ok and it downloaded and installed the updates no problem.
It appears to be built from Ubuntu 15.10, or thats what comes up before the OS loads anyway.
The software centre is unable to connect to the internet, the same goes for steam which is pre installed. Also I have installed runescape which appears to be installed, however i have noticed this in terminal W: Failed to fetch http://repo.play-linux.net/dists/vei...amd64/Packages 403 Forbidden
Also when it was installing it had the typical ubuntu installer which said for best install you need such and such gb free space which was ticked and "connected to the internet" which wasn't.
my knowledge is pretty limited
Id there anything obvious that I'm missing out on?
I am an bit confused but maybe you can shed some light on this.
Is there some network control setting panel? I usually do this sort of stuff from a command line, does it have access to a xterm or konsole or terminal?
My first impression would be that you have some network controller card that either isn't set up right or failed on some behind the scenes update. Not sure how you can both update and not access the internet. Some oddity of ipv6/4 maybe. Some proxy issue?
The software centre is unable to connect to the internet,
Can hardly happen after what you have narrated. Try install simple software, like simple text editor, just to find out if truly it cannot connect to the repository.
Did you have enough hard drive space as required by the play-linux when you attempted to install? Chance is, if space is insufficient the software center will be disconnected from the repo.
As hinted, try install small package of application just to find out if your installer is working or not.
But most of all, check you system pursuant to queries above by *jefro*. His opinion is aimed at a more technical point which, if help is need, only few of them can enlighten you.
Jefro. Hi, I cant find a GUI for network control settings but it does have xterm.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the things in the rest of your reply so cant realy reply re them.
i have re-booted and the update manager connected and updated a load of things and also I am on here ok, but software centre is giving the same response "unable to connect, are you connected to the internet"
malekmustaq. Sorry don't know how to install software (other than runescape, which i copy and paste from there website into xterm) other than using software center.
The install was a fresh install overwriting the previous OS on a 160gb HD so plenty of space on the drive
when I did the original install one of the first screens to come up was the one saying that i needed so much hd space which was ticked however where it said "connected to the internet" there was a cross indicating that it wasn't. this is odd as the computer is wired to the router and works ok on the other OS's.
For clarity I have 3 hard drives each with a separate Operating system on and boot to the one i want using the bias. when i loaded Play linux i unplugged the other 2 hard drives so that i didn't accidentally install on the wrong one.
If you are using Ubuntu 15.10, the reason you are unable to install software through the software center is because that Ubuntu release stopped support in July. So you will either need to search for the archived repositories or install 14.04 or 16.04.
Yancek has you started in maybe correct direction. That distro has a set of locations of where to look for software. You can edit that list. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...es/CommandLine It may cause some other issues. Might end up doing a version upgrade in the end. Not sure why they are so far behind.
Thanks for the update. Doubt too many of us have used it so we can't replicate it.
I don't think I'd dump it exactly. I'd mess with it more. However, you don't have a lot of time in it so you have a good opportunity to test out others.
