php+mysql

I have been trying to get php and mysql working together for awhile now and so far no luck.
The server is red hat 9 and I installed mysql 4.0.20 by rpm and php 4.2.2 also by rpm. I than installed php+mysql by rpm which added the mysql.so file and mysql.ini file however when I try to load phpmyadmin it says cannot find mysql extension. I have added the extension=mysql.so line in php.ini what could I be missing?
