Perseverance
 

After a day of frustration and numerous re-installs I have managed to get RedHat 7.3 up and running. To switch from XP to RH7 involves switching off and adding an old sound card and graphics card. A bit longwinded but OK cus I'm where I wanted to be.
Many thanks to all of you who took the trouble to help with my previous posts.
Just got to get a modem working and I can more or less abandon
Windows.

My modem still doesn't work, but all the rest is so perfect that I'll just do without it.
I recommend you apt to install/uninstall everything you need, this is just an amazing app that worth a try.
