Permissions on /home/~user

How to setup Mandrake so it wouldn't restore the mod 700 in the /home/~user directory?
/ home/~user/public_html is where I keep my virtual host directories and with the default permissions -700- apache can not access them.
I've read is posible to symlinks the directories to point to for example /var/www but how?

Thanks in advanced

In order to allow incoming HTTP connections, you need to give executable permission. Eg. your home directory /home/user needs to have a permission of 701, so does your public_html directory.

To create symlinks, user the command
# ln -s /home/user/public_html /var/www/html/user

you should be able to access using the URL: http://machinename/user

Thanks for your reaction aroop:

The real problems is that whenever permission I give to /home/~user after a while the systems reset it to mod 700. I am running Mandrake in linux secure mode

Thanks also for your response on symlinks, but would I have to cp all /home/~user/public_html to /var/www/~user/public_html, and can I symlinks entire directories?

I'm sorry the silly questions,

Thanks in advance.
