permissions on external hard drive.

I'm having trouble with a external hard drive.

It mounts just fine but I only have read permission on it.

In window$ I have read write permissions.

So I'm wondering why linux mounts it with read only permisions? What controls this? and how I can make it so I can read write to this.

I'm a bit confused as usb keys mount with read and write so whats going on?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Your external hard drive is most likely using NTFS partition.

if so you will need to install ntfs-3g; follow this thread to do so, and you are done:

Awesome advice.

Bang on the money. I'm using pacman so I obviously couldn't use the thread but it lead me down the right track.

I actually just installed ntfs-3g and ntfsprogs and the rest was handled automatically.

Thanks again
