Permissions of folder keeps resetting automatically

Hi everyone,
I've posted this question to other site and I havent received a single reply to it. Hopefully someone here might shed some light :).

I got a brand new machine for my company and installed ubuntu in it. 12 pcs (some windows 7 and some vista) are connected to this machine through LAN. I have 2 internal hard drives in the ubuntu machine. one internal is the "C" drive where ubuntu desktop is installed. The other drive is where i have created a folder "Projects" that has rwx permission to everyone.
I gave this permission by right clicking on the folder and checking the share options. some computers still saw the folder as read only so i also typed chmod 777 -R through terminal and everything went fine. But after few hours suddenly pcs started seeing this folder as read only. I checked the properties of the folder in ubuntu and the shared options were unchecked. I checked the boxes and all was fine. A day later again the pcs saw it as read only and when i check the shared options the box is unchecked again.

Im not sure why this is happening. Please help! :) The samba settings seem fine as far as i can judge after googling for a few days.

Any help in this is much appreciated!

Not saying that this is the solution but the correct syntax is:
Code:

chmod -R 777

It sounds like you've been setting this up mostly through the GUI so far - which is fine. Are you comfortable with posting some command line output?

First, what are the linux permissions for the folder that's shared?

Code:

ls -l /media/folder
(substituting the actual location for /media/folder)

- and do they change?

And what is your samba configuration? Post your /etc/samba/smb.conf file. (Use [code][/code] tags around the details.)

Thank you so much for your reply! @Nexus - yes you're right, I meant chmod -R 777 :) thanks.
@SecretCode - I like to be more command oriented, it feels you have more control that way. Here's the ls -l list I got from the terminal:

By looking at this it looks like every folder/file have rwx permission to everyone. Today is a holiday so I need to jump into their computers to see if this is really true to them. I'll update this post again if their computer sees it as read only or not.

Here is my smb file:

I deleted some of the smb comments in the post to not make it looks so big. My main smb file contains all the comments as it is a good guide to me to know what is what.

Thank you again for your time and effort in helping me out.

Hi, Just one more question. In the ls -l list I noticed that some start with -rwx and some start with drwx. What is the difference between both? Cause I put the same command for the entire folder "Projects" shouldn't all have the same starting? instead of some starting with -rwx and some with drwx?

Thanks

You forgot to use code tags! I'm reposting your samba.conf to fix that ...

Thanks

The initial d simply means a directory, while - means a regular file.

I see you've got an autocad share as well - does the problem happen with that?

Also - did you check the permissions when this read-only problem has hit?

May need to see
Code:

ls -ld /media/P-drive/Projects

gtrrockz84 01-02-2012 11:01 AM

Thanks. Im new to this so im still at the beginning of my learning curve :). Not sure how to use code tags though.

SecretCode 01-02-2012 11:01 AM

See the link in my first post!

gtrrockz84 01-02-2012 11:06 AM

I didnt know the ls -l command until recently. When the read only was hit i went to the folder and right clicked its sharing options and I saw that the boxes were unchecked. So I just checked them.

I put Autocad in there too cause for some reason the AutoCad folder was read only no matter what I did on the sharing options folder. So I went to Samba utility and added that folder (through GUI) and then we were able to work on that folder as well.

Here's the list of ls -ld
Code:

drwxrwxrwx 144 kevin kevin 12288 2011-12-30 10:24 /media/P-drive/Projects

SecretCode 01-02-2012 12:04 PM

Next time it goes read-only, check that ls -ld command.

gtrrockz84 01-02-2012 12:48 PM

Will do. Thanks

Hi SecretCode,
Happened again. I should note that it only happens to 1 guy who uses a Windows 7 machine. There are other people using Windows 7 and Vista and they have no problem. For some odd reason he sees some files as read only. This time the folder he was trying to modify i have taken the ls -l screen shot

Code:

kevin@Server:~$ sudo ls -l /media/P-drive/Projects/"EQPro Testing"/2010/Janice/LGSSQA44/EQPro/Data
total 6764
-rwxrwxrwx 1 nobody nogroup 2310144 2011-12-27 10:04 EQProData-429 - Blank.mdb
-rwxrwxrwx 1 kevin  kevin  2269184 2011-09-14 08:38 EQProData-429 - Empty.mdb
-rwxrwxrwx 1 nobody nogroup 2338816 2012-01-03 09:37 EQProData-429.mdb
-rwxrwxrwx 1 nobody nogroup      0 2010-12-28 10:46 Limerick Test Steve.txt
-rwxrwxrwx 1 kevin  kevin        0 2010-12-28 10:46 Limerick Test.txt

-rwxrwxrwx 1 nobody nogroup    101 2011-02-07 15:14 Test of EQPro with Windows 7 and Access 2003.txt

The terminal says they are all rwx and this is true for all computers except his. Possibly something to do with his settings in his computer?

SecretCode 01-03-2012 02:32 PM

If it's only one user, or not all users at the same time, then it can't be the underlying permissions on the server, it must be something to do with the state of the session between his computer and the server.

Does he have the same windows edition as the other Windows 7 users? Is he in the same workgroup?

gtrrockz84 01-03-2012 03:38 PM

They both have same edition and he's in the same workgroup. I checked his and other windows 7 all other network settings and the seem to be the same. He restarts his computer and now it seems to be working fine. Im kinda lost and what could be the underlying problem.
