permissions mistake
 
So I thought I was user avan in my home directory... I was actually root in the root directory (wrong xterm). I entered chmod -R 777 * and hit enter. I now can't login as root, and get all sorts of errors on boot. Suggestions?

boot from a floppy or CD, mount the partition, and rechange the permissions back to 755.
normal umask.
