permissions and grub loader

Hello

I have installed Mandriva 2010 on a HP Media Center pc with XP and Mint 7 previously installed. XP opens up when selected but selecting Mint 7 produces 'error 11' on the start up screen.

The following commands result in a message 'permission denied' or similar:
/boot/grub/menu.lst file
/etc/fstab file

Resolution of this problem would be greatly appreciated as there are files in Mint 7 which I cannot access although I can see folders in Mint 7 by mounting its partition in Mandriva.

Wishing all subscribers a Happy 2010 - hopefully better than 2009.

11 is usually file not found. That could be because the entry no longer exists. This can be for a number of reasons such as:
The file/path has been deleted/wiped or (and this has got me in the past) a new distro changes grub and the boot string becomes wrong. Typically a drive/partition that used to be called 'hdx' being addressed as 'sdx' and visa-v.

I would suggest you try dropping into the grub cli and booting by hand and you'll probably be able to spot whats going on.
You probably know this stuff (applies to grub <2 - after that 'kernel' is renamed 'linux'). Thankfully ls works, as does tab otherwise it would be a chore :-)

root (hd0,1)
kernel <path_to_kernel> ro root=/dev/{sdx or hdx}
initrd <path_to_initrd>
boot
