Permissions
Hi.
It's been a fair while since I used the debian install on my Amigaone (dual boot that got borked after installation of sii card) so I cant remember most of what I learned. So whats da prob ? Ok.. I installed debian on the father in laws computer and he kinda likes it (dual boots with ... XP) but he wants to run his BOINCS clients on it. Thats problem Numero Uno !! (worry about that one later) ok.. After hitting google I found some sources. So.. I SU in a cli and fire up Kwrite to edit sources.list with the needed urls etc. But on saving out I'm given the "You dont have root permissions... Tuff shyzer" spiel ?? Ok.. Maybe I dont ?? So... How do I get the key to the golden crapper ? :-) |
well, you get root permissions by switching over to the root user (or having someone do it for you). You'll need the root password, of course. Then you'll probably just want to make changes to the file as root (alternativly, you could change the owner (chown) to something more convienent, but there may be a reason that file is owned by root).

su to root then edit the file using vi or vim or nano or .. save when done and its all good.

nano .. That was the name of the damn editor I used to use !!
Thanks for help guys, I will give that a thrash. btw.. surely SU'ing in a cli makes you root ? I have to enter the root password !! Also found out there is no root login in kde in this install. I found out how to suss that out. Quote:
