Permission denied when logged in as Root

I am taking an intro to Linux class and trying to do file navagation exercises but I am getting denied when logged in as Root

root@zman-desktop:~# /var/log/boot.log
-bash: /var/log/boot.log: Permission denied
root@zman-desktop:~#

It appears that you are trying to execute a log file. The log file cannot be executed. You should put some kind of file reading command in front.
