perl vs perl(the)
 

Silly question probably.............

Yesterday I downloaded the source rpm for Glitter (a newsgroup binaries downloader). Rebuilding it into an rpm worked just fine. However when trying to install it I get a dependency error saying it needs perl(the). But I do have it. Not version 5 yet as I have various dependency problems to work out. Im using Yellow Dog 4 on an old Mac so I am behind the times a wee bit ;-)

What exactly is perl(the) vs perl? Various Search engines (Google & several repositories) all seem to ignore parenthesis.

After going through squite a few pages in various Google lists... and different search parameters... it seems that perl(somethingorother) dependencies is a somewhat common problem.

I have more to read but it sounds like the usual solution is to simply filter that one out. However a few people say that its there for a reason and its better to find out why the program asking for it. Sensible precaution. I will probably try the filter method first and run the program for awhile, then post what happens.

Oh and BTW... I was posting this reply before on my laptop (W2K) with Firefox. But as soon as it got to the reply page the program took up %100 of CPU time and heavily thashing my hard drive. And wouldnt stop. Firefox has done this before occationally with certain pages that it said were still loading. Still figuring that one out ;-)

Success and failure..........

After looking some information and deliberating, ignoring dependencies really did sound like a bad idea. Even though it was only one that seemed a common error. So I built from the tarball instead. Easy enough to do (barring the usual dependency nightmares) but I prefer package management. Still, its better that than screwing something up.

The good... Glitter runs. The bad. It gives me an error Gary/servbuf not implemented on this system. So perhaps it needs something more than FC2... which Yellow Dog is based on.

Im not giving up. I have Pan but would like something akin to Grabit on Windows.
