Question Periodic System beeping :S

Hey,

I have 3 computers networked at home. One of them is my redhat server i use for php testing etc....

It is just running as a tower by itself. So i just turn it on and then write my php scripts on windows and drag them over to the nixbox and goto the file in ie...

Anyway about every half an hour the nixbox does a systembeep with that little speaker inside, like when u get an error in dos..

So I was just wondering why it's doing it?, it's just starting to annoy me

Take a look at /var/log/messages and see if there's any sort of error that corresponds in time reasonably well with the beeps. Another good place to look is root's email (and anybody else's email if you're the only user of the box).

Unfortunately, I can't be much more helpful than that, because almost ANYTHING could be producing a beep.

If it is on a predictable schedule, trying looking for what processes are running just before and after it. (Since a process can come and go in a tenth of a second, this is not an iron-clad way to catch it, I'm afraid.)

Also, look at the cron entries. If its happening periodically, then something is triggering it. MOST such beasties are run thru cron.

Good luck,

CHL

logs retrieved

I took your advice, I went to the logs after it happened.

Oct 2 22:11:28 nixbox dhclient: DHCPACK from 192.168.0.1
Oct 2 22:11:28 nixbox dhclient: bound to 192.168.0.95 -- renewal in 251 seconds.
Oct 2 22:15:39 nixbox dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 192.168.0.1 port 67
Oct 2 22:15:39 nixbox dhclient: DHCPACK from 192.168.0.1
Oct 2 22:15:39 nixbox dhclient: bound to 192.168.0.95 -- renewal in 276 seconds.
Oct 2 22:20:15 nixbox dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 192.168.0.1 port 67
Oct 2 22:20:15 nixbox dhclient: DHCPACK from 192.168.0.1
Oct 2 22:20:15 nixbox dhclient: bound to 192.168.0.95 -- renewal in 256 seconds.

the actual event occured at arounf 22:20:15 (10:20pm)

But those don't look like anything related

I had a monitor keyboard and mouse hooked up this time to see what happens. It seems like a hardware restart type thing. The screen goes blank then returns. The laser on the mouse flashes. And the hdd sounds like its spins faster.

I'm confused
