PCTel modem installation
 

Hello again,

I'm having troubles installing my PCTel HSP56 micromodem (internal).

Using MandrakeLinux 10.0, kernel 2.6.3, and KDE desktop.

After browsing around, I've realized that winmodem were really not the answer but I'm broke and can't afford to buy a new compatible one at the moment.

So here's what I did:

I downloaded the pctel-0.9.7-9 driver from linmodems.technion.ac.il
After carefully reading all the material, I bravely launched the terminal (very daring for me) and followed their instructions for installation.
Everything went fine until I got the following response:
**error your kernel version is 2.6.3 this package only support 2.4.x kernels.** compilation error

So here I am.
After running a search with "kernel" as keyword in the software manager, I can see that the 2.4.25.2mdk version of the kernel is there.
What would happen if I were to install it? Would it override my 2.6, and mess everything up badly?

I've looked up the pctel website and found that they sell for $15 the latest driver, but I really refuse to pay for it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

www.pricewatch.com Get a external serial hardwaremodem you will never have to worry about a driver. I got one for 15 bucks. A dollar more than the driver I would of had to pay for at linuxant.com. I'm sure you can come up with 15 bucks plus shipping.

Yeap. Looks like that's my only short-term option.
I've looked around in the "hardware" forum, and although lots of posts relate to this very type of modem, none reflects my configuration.

I'm not giving up looking around though, because here in south africa I don't know any second-hand hardware shop.

Still hopeful that in the end someone will come up with something.

I'm going to download it right now and let you know.

I must admit that I've not touch Linux for a month, because most of my work involves internet searches and without a modem I had to go back to M$.

Latest trial failed...
 

After downloading the latest driver I tried to install it to no avail.
Here's the display it gave me:

please read the FAQ about reporting compilation problems and report this problem

Before reporting any error, I'd like to make sure that I did everything right.
What have I forgotten to do?

That's interesting... from the error it seems as though there is something the matter with your kernel source files.
I also notice that you are using a 2.6.3 kernel version, which is somewhat old. We have only tested with 2.6.8 and later kernels, and I know for certain that 2.6.4 kernels don't work (yet). Is it possible to upgrade your distribution to a newer version?

Sorry I don't have a better answer for you, but if you're willing to upgrade things might work for you.

PS: I usually run "./configure -auto" instead of "./setup". This probably won't make any difference.

I'm afraid I'll only be able to download any upgrade when the modem is operational... It's a catch 22 situation!

In the meantime, going back to frustrating M$
