This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Hi.
I have a bit of a problem when installing my PCTel modem on Mandrake 9.2.
First things first. I downloaded the driver (version 0.9.6), and reeded the install guide that was with it. I did everything that the guide said and it went just fine.
So i installed the modules with insmod, and then checked with lsmod that they where there.
So, now what? When i try to configure the Internet connection settings, i first chose to try to connect using a winmodem, but it's unable to find the modem. So i tried using the modem option, but it asks the comport where the modem it's supposed to be. I know that the modem is in the ttys15, but the options that it offers me are from ttys0 to ttys7, so how do i get the ttys15 option?
I also would like to know if there's a way to insmod the drivers or modules without the -f option. I had to force the installation of the modules because there's somekind of problem with the version of the gcc used to compile the driver and the gcc used to compile the kernel. It says something like the kernel was compiled with gcc version 3 and the drivers that i try to install are compiled with gcc version 2, and that is known that this show give me problems. So it's there solution to this?
Remember that i'm a newbie, so please try to make it simple for me, OK!
