for some reason now ifconfig just shows my stupid 56k and ifconfig eth0 doesn't show an ip....but anyway the strugle continues...

dhcpcd eth0 did nothing

dhclient eth0 gave me this:

Internet Software Consortium DHCP Client V3.0pl2

Listening on LPF/eth0/00:10:a4:b6:13:ec
Sending on LPF/eth0/00:10:a4:b6:13:ec
Can't bind to dhcp address: Address already in use
Please make sure there is no other dhcp server
running and that there's no entry for dhcp or
bootp in /etc/inetd.conf. Also make sure you
are not running HP JetAdmin software, which
includes a bootp server.

If you did not get this software from ftp.isc.org, please
get the latest from ftp.isc.org and install that before
requesting help.

If you did get this software from ftp.isc.org and have not
yet read the README, please read it before requesting help.
If you intend to request help from the dhcp-server@isc.org
mailing list, please read the section on the README about
submitting bug reports and requests for help.

Please do not under any circumstances send requests for
help directly to the authors of this software - please
send them to the appropriate mailing list as described in
the README file.

Well, the dhcp experiment has ended *poorly*, sadly, I feel I'm now at the end any real usefulness to you as I suspect your isp is using pppoe or something else to deliver a wan address to your locale that I am totally unfamiliar with. that eth0:9 must be from your isp since you certainly didn't type anything to make it happen.

Yes they will, there are plenty of good people here with your setup, I would recommend you start a new thread and put dsl and possibly pppoe or whatever protocol your isp says you're using in it and see what happens.

good luck and don't give up, others here have this working.
