I am using pclinuxos 2013.10 32 bit version. If I recall isn't there is a module called PAE to access more than 4GB. Do 32 bit distros load this module automatically if it detects more than 4GB on the system?
There is no standard. Some of the newer ones are forcing pae by default. Some require command line options. There is also some issue with board support on some. Pae has been known to cause issues. Most people that use it now are simply on borrowed time. For most users the 64 bit distro's should be used.
