Does your modem do all the authentication on its own, or does the computer need to give it the authentication information (PPPoE)?

If your modem does the authentication, then all you need to do is plug in a wire and set the computer's ethernet port to use DHCP.

Poke around the "Configure your computer -> Network and Internet" menu - or something like that.

I'm assuming that a driver is loaded for your ethernet chip - otherwise we need to look at other options.
