PC-to-PC connection with SuSe 8.2

I'm trying to direct connect a machine running Windows ME with a machine running SuSe 8.1.

I've patched together a DHCPD file following a few threads here, I've set up some IP address ranges to assign to the Win ME machine, but the results I get after running DHCPD is (among other things) "0 leases assigned". Anybody know why it won't assign a lease to the Win ME machine and allow the ME machine to recognize another system?

I am using a cross-over cable, a D-Link network card in the ME laptop, and SuSe 8.2 (with an onboard ethernet card).

I have no idea how to get these two machines to see each other. I just want to move files from the ME to the Linux so that I can wipe out the ME laptop, clean the registry, and start fresh with a decent OS.

I would be incredibly grateful for some help.

wouldn't it be much easier to assign
both boxes a fixed IP?

Cheers,
Tink

Maybe, maybe. But how do I just shake hands or ping one or the other to let them know that they can see each other? I have no reason to think the cross-cable or network cards don't work, but it's frustrating when you're not sure everything you do is for naught because they can't see each other.

I thought the DHCPD file should have worked, but it assigned 0 leases.

And how do I assign a fixed IP address to the ME machine? Through the SuSe server?

Not too familiar with ME, but since it's a
98 offspring I'd look in the control-center,
network, TCP/IP for the ethernet-card and
give it an IP ... how did you set it up for
DHCP? ;)

Cheers,
Tink
