Angry patching and re-compiling kernel

Howdy. I posted a message a while ago about patching the kernel
(ATA 133 under MAndrake 8.2) Anyway, I applied the patch successfully
and after I go into xconfig I follow the instructions given with the patch.
To make a long story short, the info. was incomplete and I have now re-installed
over a dozen times. I am partially successfull sometimes.. sound doesn't work or network goes down
but I have read one hell of a lot of stuff and I find that many of the
instructions are not good. Can anyone point me to a good source?
Thanks in advance.
