Cool Password Protecting Folders with Apache

Ok can anyone out there help me with this problem... I have a web server running apache, and I need to protect certain folders with a login and password. I've searched and I can find some suggestions, but yet none of them work. Can someone tell me exactly how this is done? Please dumb it down a bit I am still new with Linux
