Password problem
 

Have been using mint 11 for past few weeks with no problem but failed to boot correctly.... menu appeared giving options for booting but kept returning to this menu without going further so I opted to go for safe booting option, after loading a few files it asked for password but kept giving me the message incorrect password so I could get no further.
Fortunately I had a cop of clonezilla and was able to restore a backup from a second hard drive but would be grateful for any observations anyone would like to make about this (in case it happens again)

By the way, is that a dual-boot? Linux, and something else? Paswords are case sensitive. Was the numlock on?

Hi there,

When you say that you are using it for couple of week, was it working fine before? Were you able to boot before without any issues? Are you using live CD to boot Linux Mint 11?

As you said that when you enter the password it is not accepting. Which user account are you using? If you are using root user account then you have to first reset the password for root user account using I am not sure about Linux Mint 11 but I have used Linux Mint 10 and it never ask you to enter root password during the install you have to reset it using sudo passwd root before you can use it. Same case with Ubuntu 10.04.

Thanks for the responses, as stated I am sorted out as I was able to use a backup using clonezilla.

However (bare in mind I am a Newbie) I found an article which advised that it was possible to modify the boot entry to show it was for a single user and from that point use # passwd to change the password, if asked for the root password to use init=bin/bash then run passwd.

I Have made a note of this so if the problem happens again this is the route I will go down.
