Password keeps changing

I'm running Suse 9.1 and like it very well. I'm new to linux and need help with this problem. My user password keeps changing. When it changes nothing I do will change it back. Logging in as root and using the passwd <user> command has no effect on it. The only way I have been able to get it back is to delete myself as user along with my home folder and the re-add myself. Any suggestions?
