Passwd passes by in chroot...won't let me change password?

So I'm working on LFS and got everything booted up and running...except I don't know what my password for root is. So when I chroot in and do Chapter 6.22, I'm told that I need to do passwd root to change it.

The issues is when I run this command, it doesn't let me put in the password twice. It just kind of reads blank twice and takes that as a password and I don't know for certain what it took.

root:/# passwd root
Changing password for root
Enter the new password (minimum of 5 characters)
Please use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
Bad password: too short.
Warning: weak password (enter it again to use it anyway).
passwd: password changed.
I tried piping an echo of a password in and it still did the same thing... Any ideas?
