passwd file

How do I turn on colors for the passwd file when I am using vi? I have a couple of Linux systems and on some the passwd file is divided in colors in columns. On others systems the passwd file is in the terminal colors.

I want to know how to turn the colors on for passwd?

Mine only turns on colors if I am editing read/write.

Otherwise it is monocrome.

The passwd file really shouldn't be edited by vi/vim.
