passphrase script to recover data

Not sure what forum this post should be placed in, so I put it into the Newbie forum.

I have a harddrive that I dusted off after being on the shelf for some time, and it used a simple password with cryptsetup. I'd like to open the harddrive to see if it has any useful files before reformatting it. I already searched LQ for a solution but did not find one. I would like to use a script to read a dictionary and try the passphrase. Does someone have a script to do this that they can post?

This would be considered cracking and therefore is against the LQ rules.

@falmdavis: even if your intention are good and you want to recover the access to a device owned by yourself, this is a kind of information that cannot be provided here, according to the LQ policy and rules. Anyway, you don't need to reinvent the wheel since there are some tools suitable for this task out there (john the ripper being one of the most known). I hope you understand why this discussion cannot take place at LinuxQuestions. Good luck!
