Partitioning problems
 

Okay, so I used a bootable Ubuntu cd to install it on my 100GB hd. I used the partition manager to create a partition for Ubuntu and resize my Windows XP NTFS partition. I had intended to create a 70GB partition for XP and approximately 30 for Linux and thats what I thought I had done in the manager (unfortunately, I wasn't exactly sure about what I was doing at the time, but it seemed as though everything was working fine) but now when I boot in XP, I apparently only have an 18.6GB partition for Windows. Something has gone wrong...

I just want to know what went wrong and figure out how to resize my windows partition to a larger size. Thanks for any help you can offer.

It would be very difficult for someone to explain what went wrong without a very detailed explanation of your procedure. Maybe someone else can come along and help you with that.

I do have a suggestion though that works for me to resize them to the size you prefer.
You maybe don't have much on the partitions yet besides the fresh install, correct ? If you do, then always do a backup of course of the things you don't want to lose (just in case)
I use “disk drake” that can be found on a Mandriva live CD or the 1st disk of a Mandriva install set. On the install disk you would want to go until your resizing is completed, before the install starts and exit the CD then..

I have done this many times using disk drake and all have been successful. But there is always that risk when resizing. Let us know how it turns out for you, good luck.......sarah

I'll back Sarah on that. I find the first install disk for Mandriva is what I use for all partitioning needs.Never failed me yet, simple to use, and once partitions done, do a hard shut down. I use the first install disk for Slackware for erasing drives with the dd comand, dumps you in a root session really quick to get it done.

you will go as far as the the eighth screen and choose "custom disk partitioning" instead of existing. It will bring you to a this:

When done and changes are commited, hold pc power button for 4 seconds and you are done............unless you decide to finish the install of Mandrake.

You will end up shrinking your linux partition then increasing windows partition, so windows should be fine, but linux install may need reinstall, not sure. Will be interested to find out.

*****do not format, you will be simply clicking on the colored partition you wish to resize, click the "resize " button that appears, use the slider or type size in the box, do same for the other and in the file menu, choose "commit". If you format you will be losing everything.
