partitioning my hard drive
 

Hello everyone,

I JUST started using linux from the bootable knoppix CD. It runs SO SLOW from the cd. I was curious about partitioning my HD, although I've never done that before. If I partition the drive will I be able to change it back to previous settings or will it be permanent? Should I install linux on my HD and just run it from there, or should I make a parition to run it faster from the disk (if so how would this work?), or does it even matter which I do. Are there pros / cons to both? I guess I'm looking for as much general info as I can get.

I have an 18.6 GB HD, and 4.74 GB are being used by windoz.

Your need unallocated empty space in order to create partitions.

This means you have to "resize" the existing partition to make say 10Gb for Knoppix and anoth 0.5Gb for a swap partition. You may need to use a Windoze based software like Partition Magic to carry out the resizing. To resize Windoze and install a Linux at the same time can be very risky because one wrong step can result the loss of both systems.

Generally you can resize your partition any number of times.

Having Knoppix installed in a HDD will dramatically improve its speed because it will have room to move and the swap is its scratch area.

If your Knoppix isn't version that comes in a DVD a 5Gb partition may be adequate. I haven't got size data of the Version 4 but Knoppix 3.6 is only 2.2Gb in my box. You do need a good few Gb for it to move around.
