Partitioning for Linux (College Version or Mandrake)
 

Hi gang,

Anyway, on my computer I have 2 HDD's. WinXP is on the C:\ and the other HDD is D:\, which I have all my data.

Now I downloaded Acronis, and when I did a partitioning run for the D:\ drive, it asked me what partition I wanted to create. It had choices like Linux EXT 2, ,Linux EXT 3 etc. Linux Reiser and Linus Swap.

Now the D:\ is presently FAT32, is that ok and what Partition choice should I choose? From list above.

You should have both of these partitions to run linux:

swap ~= size of your RAM or 512MB
rest you can make ext3 or reiser.

So on my D:\ drive I make it into 2 parts. one for Linus the other for my WinXP files, I hope to slowly convert my system from Win to Linux.

Now I have 768MB ram, I would like to split the D:\ HDD in to 2 parts. The one I want for using Linux, I should partition into a Linux Swap partition.
Is that right?

Your hard drive --->>> 2 partitions A and B (just an example)
A = for windows
B= linux

B ---->>> split this into 2 ---> swap ~ same size as ur RAM + rest of it make reiser or ext3 (this is where linux will be installed.

Hi again,

I did it, anyway almost. I used Acronis DiskDirector to partition D:| drive. Now I have WinXP on C:|.
SO on the D:| drive a now have 3 partitions. Part D = DATA (FAT32), the 2 new Parts are G: = LinuxOS and the third was H: = LinuxSWAP. Checked it on File explorer in WIndows, and it read the new partitions. Great.

Now sounds good so far , right, not that easy. Although I did it with DiskDirector, in reality the new parts were left has FAT32's. SO no problem up to this point.
I changed the boot disk to my CR_RW drive and put the Linux College Disk in, restart and boing, up came the install sequence for Linux College. So far so good. I got excited, but kept reserved for hidden surprises.

Now it went to the Partitioning part of the install, I assumed it found the correct D:| drive partitions but didn't. It asked which format I wanted, selected the right one and till no worky. RATS!

Went back to windows explorer ans seen that it actually changed the C:| and D:| drive lettering and format.

So I am thinking that ACRONIS suks as a partioning software and that I should use Partitioning Magic *8 instead to do this and also that maybe I should use the C:| drive to install the Linux OS, with a Linux Swap of course.

What do you think. I am 1/2 way there thats for sure.

Why dont you let the linux installer partition the hard drive for you? It is automatic and flawless. Every major distro will partition it perfectly for you.

Yes the installer with create the partitions for you. All you needed to do was have two partitions on ur D: drive, one for your data and the other for Linux, don't worry about swap right now. When you are installing linux then you can then make ur swap and your fs partitions...

Hi man,

So I have successful installed the Linux Mandrake v10 on computer, but during the installation it would only let me install a certain amount of space 262MB. So I only got ther basic in. When I booted up Mandrake, all there were, was a blue screen, (not related to the other blue screen of death), lol, and a clock in the corner.
I'm mythed about why I made 3 mandrake ISO's, when only one was used for install. Maybe being presumptious, but I will try them tomorrow to see what happens, or am I wasting my time.

My partition is 8 GB with a swap size of 5 GB.
AMD Athelon 2500+
768 MB Ram

2 HDD and 1 DVD ROM and 1 CDRW ROM

So I figured out what has happen with the 1st attempt to install Mandrake. Its simple, don't use a Partitioning Software suite, because Linux will create one during the install, including the swap partition.
Although it asked for and found the partitions I created, it still made new ones. Still Mythed about it but anyway, I was able to install everything I wanted, took about 2 GB's to install everything except the SERVER modules that come with it.

DiskDirectorSuite was good to allow me to choose my OS on stratup though, because it is part of the package as well. Any boot manager would work I am sure.

Overall I am pleased with Mandrake, should of did it years ago when I was first curious about the Linus thing. Nice GUI and eaze of flow. Now I don't worry about what surprises behold me, (WinXP).

It detected my printer, (CANON i3290), and LAN card, setup with my present ISP, (TELUS). no problems.

I know now that I have to download the drivers for my vid card so that I can get my screen resolution smaller.
